Following her early involvement with theater, she pursued numerous classes and summer camps, eventually becoming the star of the 2015 Broadway national tour of “Mamma Mia!” as Sophie, and later completing her degree in musical theater from Texas State University. Her connection to “Beauty and the Beast” runs deep as it was one of her early stage productions. At the young age of 11, she had a role that required her to perform high kicks while dressed as a sugar cube in “Be Our Guest.” Johnson always admired Belle for her strength and admired the attention she received from male characters.
Philippe’s journey into musical theater stemmed from his childhood enthusiasm for puppetry, inspired by Jim Henson and “Sesame Street.” He was particularly captivated by the visual aspects of puppetry, which led him to explore theater further. After earning a BFA from Elon University, he participated in the hit productions of “Hamilton,” where he played Hercules Mulligan and James Madison.
The pair first crossed paths during the final auditions for “Beauty and the Beast,” where they were among various contenders for the lead roles. Johnson felt a strong sense of confidence in Philippe’s talent, stating she knew he would secure the role thanks to the depth he brought to the character of the Beast.
