Fergie L. Philippe and Kyra Belle Johnson are set to lead the first North American tour of Disney’s beloved musical “Beauty and the Beast,” a revival that marks the Broadway show’s return after over 25 years. Both performers have personal connections to the story; Philippe saw the musical as a college freshman, while Johnson made her debut as a sugar cube in a sixth-grade production. They are excited to bring this classic tale to life, especially for children experiencing live theater for the first time and for parents reminiscing about their own memories with the story.
Philippe, who takes on the role of the Beast, and Johnson, playing Belle, are eager to embrace the multigenerational aspect of the production. Philippe remarked on the significance of Disney stories in the cultural fabric of American life, emphasizing the joy of watching different generations connect over this narrative of love and acceptance. The tour is set to begin in Schenectady, New York, this June, with an official opening in Chicago scheduled for July. Both performers have committed to the tour for a full year and one month.
This musical adaptation is based on the animated film released in 1991. It tells the story of Belle, a bright and adventurous young woman, and the Beast, a prince cursed to remain in his monstrous form until he learns the true meaning of love. Accompanying the storyline are memorable songs by composer Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, featuring hits such as “Be Our Guest” and “Gaston.” The dialogue was crafted by Linda Woolverton, and the animated film made history as the first of its kind to earn an Oscar nomination for best picture.
Johnson pointed out a timeless theme within the story that resonates deeply: the importance of looking beyond appearances and being open to new experiences. She highlighted the values of forgiveness and second chances, and how love can emerge in the most unexpected situations. Raised in Los Angeles, Johnson developed a passion for performing at a young age. She recalls singing in her crib and was inspired after watching a production of “Oliver!” at the age of 7, realizing she wanted to be on stage herself.
Following her early involvement with theater, she pursued numerous classes and summer camps, eventually becoming the star of the 2015 Broadway national tour of “Mamma Mia!” as Sophie, and later completing her degree in musical theater from Texas State University. Her connection to “Beauty and the Beast” runs deep as it was one of her early stage productions. At the young age of 11, she had a role that required her to perform high kicks while dressed as a sugar cube in “Be Our Guest.” Johnson always admired Belle for her strength and admired the attention she received from male characters.
Philippe’s journey into musical theater stemmed from his childhood enthusiasm for puppetry, inspired by Jim Henson and “Sesame Street.” He was particularly captivated by the visual aspects of puppetry, which led him to explore theater further. After earning a BFA from Elon University, he participated in the hit productions of “Hamilton,” where he played Hercules Mulligan and James Madison.
The pair first crossed paths during the final auditions for “Beauty and the Beast,” where they were among various contenders for the lead roles. Johnson felt a strong sense of confidence in Philippe’s talent, stating she knew he would secure the role thanks to the depth he brought to the character of the Beast. Philippe shared his admiration for her unique audition style when she brought along a beautifully illustrated Charles Dickens book, which she felt embodied Belle’s character. Both performers express immense respect for the creative instincts that enhance their performances, marking the beginning of what promises to be a memorable tour.
