LUBBOCK, Texas — In a thrilling matchup, JT Toppin delivered an impressive performance with a career-high of 41 points and 15 rebounds, leading the No. 12 Texas Tech to a close 111-106 victory against Arizona State during double overtime on Wednesday night.

Darrion Williams contributed significantly, scoring 27 points for the Red Raiders. His vital steal and subsequent two free throws with 1:49 remaining in the second overtime put Texas Tech ahead for good. Toppin sealed the game with a dunk in the final minute after receiving a pass from Williams, who also hit a critical jumper with just 25 seconds left in the first overtime to tie the game at 96.

Texas Tech’s score of 111 marked their highest tally in a Big 12 game this season, improving their record to 19-5 overall and 10-3 in conference play. Meanwhile, Arizona State, now 12-12 and 3-10 in the Big 12, has encountered a challenging streak, having lost four consecutive games. Adam Miller led the Sun Devils with 22 points, supported by BJ Freeman with 21, Amier Ali with 18, Alston Mason with 16, and Shawn Phillips with 15.

In a decisive moment late in regulation, Miller’s floater with just 10 seconds left pushed Arizona State ahead 90-88, right after he managed to recover his own inbounds pass. However, a putback by Chance McMillian, who totaled 14 points, forced overtime with only 0.8 seconds remaining.

In terms of significant player absences, Arizona State’s freshman star Jayden Quaintance did not participate due to a left ankle injury he sustained during a previous game against Oklahoma State. On the other hand, Texas Tech achieved a remarkable feat by securing ten wins through their first 13 Big 12 contests, showcasing their recent success with eight victories in their last nine games.

As a key moment in the game, with the first overtime winding down and the score tied, Texas Tech’s freshman Christian Anderson executed a critical steal after a timeout for Arizona State. He then passed to Kerwin Walton, whose layup effort was thwarted by Freeman’s astounding block with just seven seconds on the clock.

Throughout the game, the lead changed hands 18 times, with only one shift occurring before halftime, and the score was tied on 14 different occasions. Looking ahead, Texas Tech is set to face Oklahoma State on Saturday, while Arizona State will host TCU in their next outing.
