MIAMI — The Miami Marlins have finalized a one-year contract with right-handed pitcher Cal Quantrill, valued at $3.5 million. Additionally, the deal includes the potential for Quantrill to earn up to $500,000 in performance-based bonuses.
Last season, Quantrill recorded a win-loss record of 8-11 with an earned run average (ERA) of 4.98 across 29 games with the Colorado Rockies. He led his team in wins and was among the top performers in starts, innings pitched, and strikeouts, tallying 110 strikeouts overall. This marked his highest number of starts since the 2022 season when he was with the Cleveland Guardians, following a reduced figure of just 19 starts in 2023.
A first-round draft pick by the San Diego Padres in 2016, Quantrill has predominantly played for the Guardians during his major league career. Throughout four seasons there, he achieved a record of 27 wins and 15 losses, while maintaining a commendable 3.58 ERA over 99 appearances. Notably, in 2022, he led the Guardians with 32 starts and achieved personal bests in innings pitched (186 and 1/3), strikeouts (128), and wins (15).
The addition of Quantrill is seen as a strategic move to bolster the team’s pitching rotation, particularly in light of the anticipated return of ace Sandy Alcántara, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery. The Marlins traded last season’s opening-day starter, Jesús Luzardo, to Philadelphia in December, while pitcher Braxton Garrett is set to miss the entire season due to a left elbow UCL revision repair with internal brace surgery.
To accommodate these roster changes, the Marlins have placed Garrett on the 60-day injured list, making room for their new signing.
