LAKELAND, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers are anticipating that Alex Cobb will not be ready for the beginning of the upcoming season.
The team’s injury update released at the outset of spring training on Wednesday indicated that Cobb is recovering from a hip inflammation issue, which required an injection treatment last week while he was throwing.
Cobb, 37, who has undergone two hip surgeries in the past, had signed a one-year contract worth $15 million just two months ago.
He was brought in to strengthen a pitching rotation that includes the AL Triple Crown and CY Young Award winner, Tarik Skubal, along with the newly signed Jack Flaherty.
Last season, Cobb faced significant limitations due to injuries, managing to pitch only three games during the regular season for the Cleveland Guardians, who topped the AL Central.
In those appearances, he recorded a 2-1 record with an impressive 2.76 ERA, alongside two postseason game outings.
During the 2023 season, Cobb played an important role for the San Francisco Giants, earning an All-Star selection and finishing with a 7-7 record and a 3.87 ERA over 28 starts.
Cobb’s career encompasses 233 starts across 13 seasons with several teams, including Tampa Bay, Baltimore, the Los Angeles Angels, Giants, and Guardians, amassing a 79-76 record with a 3.84 ERA.
The Tigers made headlines last year by ending a 10-year absence from the postseason, achieving a wild card spot with a strong late-season performance.
They proceeded to sweep Houston during the first round of the playoffs before facing elimination from the AL Division Series at the hands of Cleveland.
To enhance their roster, the Tigers brought in Gleyber Torres, a two-time All-Star second baseman, and are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing two-time All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman.
