LONDON — King Charles III took a step outside his royal duties by learning how to throw an American football with a quarterback-style approach, a participatory activity that certainly didn’t involve any risky maneuvers like the notorious tush push.

At the age of 76, the king made a visit to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London, participating in a community event organized in collaboration with the Premier League club and the NFL.

During the event, the monarch received throwing tips from Phoebe Schecter, who is the captain of the British women’s flag football team. After some instruction, he decided to give it a go.

Efe Obada, a British-Nigerian player who has spent the last three seasons as a defensive end with the Washington Commanders, commented on the king’s enthusiasm, noting that he really “got stuck in” and exhibited fantastic energy throughout the event.

While Obada pointed out that the king’s throwing technique could use some improvement, he appreciated the king’s effort and the positive response he received from the crowd. “His technique wasn’t immaculate; I wanted him to get a little closer to the target so he could really get into it, but he was having an excellent time and the reception was warm,” Obada remarked.

The Huddle Project, which is a joint initiative between Spurs and the NFL, aims to provide support and activities for children in the Tottenham area, showcasing the club’s commitment to community engagement.

Additionally, during his visit, the king took the opportunity to take photographs with Son Heung-min, a prominent player for Tottenham Hotspur.
