Five individuals are currently unaccounted for following the capsizing of a fishing vessel near Jeju Island in South Korea, as reported by local authorities on Wednesday.
According to officials from Seogwipo city’s coast guard, the 32-ton fishing boat had ten crew members on board. The vessel issued a distress signal around 8 p.m. Later, rescue efforts led to the retrieval of five crew members, including the South Korean captain, three crew members from Vietnam, and one from Indonesia. Fortunately, those rescued did not appear to suffer from any life-threatening injuries.
In response to this incident, approximately 20 vessels including coast guard, navy, and civilian boats were dispatched to aid in the search efforts for the missing persons.
Choi Sang-mok, South Korea’s acting leader, has directed officials to utilize “all available equipment and personnel” in the operation to locate the missing crew members while ensuring the safety of those involved in the rescue activities.
