CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox have finalized a one-year deal with center fielder Michael A. Taylor, valued at $1.95 million.
The team officially announced this new contract on Wednesday.
Last season, Taylor played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he recorded a batting average of .193, hit five home runs, and drove in 21 runs, compiling an OPS of .543 across 113 games. He faced difficulties at the plate, striking out 105 times in 269 at-bats.
As Taylor approaches his 34th birthday next month, he presents an additional option for the White Sox in center field, particularly if they opt to trade away Luis Robert Jr.
Alternatively, the team might use Taylor as a way to give Robert some necessary rest to help maintain his health throughout the season.
In 2021, Taylor earned a Gold Glove award while playing with the Kansas City Royals, showcasing his defensive skills. Over the course of his 11-year major league career, he has achieved a career batting average of .235 with 100 home runs, 120 stolen bases, and an OPS of .671, playing for teams such as Washington, Kansas City, Minnesota, and Pittsburgh.
In a related move to create space on their roster, the White Sox have placed right-handed pitcher Jesse Scholtens on the 60-day injured list as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent on March 1.
