SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Padres have officially signed veteran outfielder Jason Heyward to a one-year contract valued at $1 million, which was announced on Tuesday.

Heyward’s contract includes the possibility of earning an additional $250,000 through performance incentives, where he can gain $50,000 for reaching plate appearances at the thresholds of 200, 250, 300, 350, and 400.

The 35-year-old baseball player had a stint last season with both the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros, where he recorded a batting average of .211, tallying 10 home runs and 37 RBIs across 87 games. Notably, he excelled in pinch-hitting situations, going 5 for 10 with two home runs, a triple, and seven RBIs.

With an impressive track record, including five Gold Glove awards, Heyward maintains a career batting average of .256. Throughout his 15 seasons in Major League Baseball, he has hit 184 home runs, driven in 718 runs, and secured 125 stolen bases, while holding a career OPS of .748. He has played for notable teams including the Atlanta Braves (2010-2014), St. Louis Cardinals (2015), Chicago Cubs (2016-2022), Dodgers (2023), and Astros (2024).

Heyward was instrumental in helping the Cubs secure the World Series title in 2016 and was also named an All-Star in 2010, finishing as the runner-up for the NL Rookie of the Year award.

Last year, he earned a salary of $9 million under his contract with the Dodgers, who subsequently released him on August 24. Just four days later, he joined the Astros.
