NEW YORK — Michael Kors designed a runway reminiscent of his own living space to showcase his latest Fall/Winter collection during New York Fashion Week, emphasizing comfort and fluidity.
“Ease is the key concept here, which is something we Americans originated. This style is global now, yet it retains an element of glamour that I particularly admire,” Kors shared in a conversation backstage prior to the show.
The designer drew inspiration from vintage photographs of style icons such as Lauren Hutton from the 1970s, alongside contemporary muses like Zoe Kravitz. “There’s a relaxed, effortless vibe to their appearances that I find very modern,” he remarked.
Kors also highlighted the significance of layering as a practical style choice. A silk dress, for instance, can be paired with a partner’s oversized coat for a chic, casual look. “I appreciate garments that allow for movement; I think there is something irresistibly attractive about that, rather than simply being undressed,” he stated.
During the show, models showcased the collection with minimal makeup and loose, natural hairstyles, navigating a long runway divided into two aisles. The event kicked off with elegantly tailored menswear jackets matched with flowing skirts or relaxed-fit trousers, showcasing an effortless blend of styles.
A fresh take on layering was evident in the mix of bikini tops beneath sizeable blazers, either worn solo or with long blouses interspersed. “We featured oversized cardigan blazers paired with soft, ethereal dresses. This collection stands against constricting garments like corsets and Spanx—it is all about comfort and ease,” Kors commented.
To incorporate a hint of glamour, the collection also included stylish dresses and jackets adorned with bright, shimmering sequins. The color palette leaned heavily on black, with touches of grey, tweed, and several muted hues such as chocolate, green, and deep purple. A unique touch was the use of long-haired shearling, presented in unexpected shades including dusty mauve and celadon, highlighted in various pieces such as peacoats, vests, handbags, and even flats.
Kors has consistently emphasized the necessity of a high-quality coat for every woman, and this collection presented a plethora of styles. From form-fitted leather trench coats to a classic trench embellished with glistening sequins, there were numerous options to choose from. He also displayed cozy long turtleneck sweaters as part of what he refers to as his “neo-classic knitwear.”
Translating his laid-back and comfortable aesthetic into the show’s environment, Kors and his team transformed a spacious venue at New York’s Terminal Warehouse into a home-like setting, complete with exposed brick, wooden accents, and decor items adjacent to the runway seating. Japanese paper lanterns adorned the high ceilings, contributing to what Kors described as “warm modernism.”
The runway attracted a host of celebrities. Despite the chilly temperatures in New York, stars like Uma Thurman, Kerry Washington, Suki Waterhouse, Rose Byrne, Lea Michele, Cristin Milioti, and Rachel Zegler gathered in the front row. Actor and reality TV personality Lisa Rinna attended the event with her daughter, Delilah Belle Hamlin, to watch her other daughter, Amelia Gray Hamlin, on the runway.
“I can’t stop raving about it,” said actor and singer Suki Waterhouse, praising the collection as “absolutely stunning.” She particularly admired the extravagant hats and blanket-like scarves. “It was everything it needed to be.” Rose Byrne echoed the sentiment, describing the outfits as “gorgeous” and incredibly wearable, adding, “I’m already obsessed with the oversized suits and classic coats. Michael Kors always delivers beautiful, chic dresses that stand the test of time.”
