BISMARCK, N.D. — On Tuesday, the adult son of U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer entered a guilty plea related to serious charges stemming from a crash that occurred in the ambulance bay of a North Dakota hospital. This incident led to a high-speed pursuit that resulted in the tragic death of a sheriff’s deputy.
Ian Cramer, who is on the brink of turning 44, pleaded guilty to several felony counts, including theft, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment, after having previously maintained his innocence last year. The court has yet to schedule a sentencing date for his pleas.
Notably, Cramer is already serving a substantial 28-year sentence for homicide and associated charges linked to the incident that resulted in the fatality of Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Martin on December 6, 2023.
According to reports from Bismarck police, Cramer’s mother brought him to the hospital due to concerns regarding his mental health. Upon her exit from the vehicle, he managed to climb into the driver’s seat of his parents’ car and recklessly reversed through the hospital’s closed ambulance bay garage door. Following this, he fled from deputies who attempted to confront him in Hazen, roughly 70 miles away from Bismarck.
During the chase, Cramer reportedly reached speeds exceeding 100 mph and continued driving despite hitting spikes that had deflated two tires. Law enforcement had placed additional spike strips in his path, leading to a collision in which Cramer crashed head-on into Deputy Martin’s patrol vehicle, propelling the deputy approximately 100 feet away. Tragically, Deputy Martin later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.
Currently, Ian Cramer is incarcerated at the North Dakota State Penitentiary located in Bismarck, where he is serving his preceding sentence.
