MESA, Arizona — Infielder Jon Berti is set to potentially increase his earnings significantly through a performance-based contract with the Chicago Cubs, where he will receive a base salary of $2 million. In addition, he can secure up to $1.3 million in bonuses linked to his plate appearances throughout the season.
Under the terms of the agreement announced on January 28, Berti stands to gain $150,000 for reaching both 200 and 250 plate appearances. Further milestones can earn him $300,000 each for 400 and 450 plate appearances respectively, and hitting the 500-plate appearance mark would yield a bonus of $400,000.
Berti, who celebrated his 35th birthday on January 22, faced a challenging previous season as he dealt with a left calf strain that limited his playtime. During his stint with the New York Yankees, he managed to achieve a batting average of .273, hitting one home run and driving in six runs over 25 games.
Making his Major League Baseball debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018, Berti has established a versatile role within the league. Throughout his career, he has maintained a .259 batting average, recording 24 home runs, 126 RBIs, and amassing 97 stolen bases across 461 games. Additionally, he has spent five seasons with the Miami Marlins prior to joining the Cubs.
