Leipzig, Germany — Following their recent 2-0 victory over St. Pauli in the Bundesliga, the club has denounced a series of racist remarks directed at their striker, Loïs Openda, on various social media platforms.

In a public statement released on Tuesday, Leipzig expressed their outrage, stating, “The racist insults and abuse towards Loïs Openda disgust us and provoke both anger and sadness.” The club emphasized its strong opposition to racism and unethical behavior, affirming their commitment to stand behind Openda, and collectively combatting all forms of discrimination.

Openda, who came onto the field during the 73rd minute while Leipzig was already ahead, unfortunately missed two opportunities to increase the lead. The 23-year-old forward, who hails from Belgium, joined Leipzig in 2023 and has already made a significant impact, netting 10 goals and providing nine assists across 30 matches in all competitions this season.

Leipzig’s response highlights the ongoing issue of racism in sports and serves as a reminder of the responsibility clubs have in supporting their players and addressing discrimination head-on.
