Rogers and American edge past Lafayette with a 60-58 victory

WASHINGTON — With just 3.2 seconds remaining on the clock, Matt Rogers netted a critical jumper in the paint, finishing the night with 19 points and guiding American University to a narrow 60-58 victory over Lafayette on Monday evening.

In addition to his scoring prowess, Rogers also contributed significantly on the boards with 10 rebounds, helping his team improve to a record of 16 wins and 10 losses, including 10 victories and 3 defeats in the Patriot League competition. Both Greg Jones and Elijah Stephens chipped in with 11 points each, showcasing a strong team effort.

On the other side, Lafayette’s offense was spearheaded by Andrew Phillips, who delivered 17 points. Alex Chaikin also made a significant impact, adding 16 points to the Leopards’ total. The Leopards now hold a record of 10 wins and 16 losses, along with 5 wins and 8 losses in league play.

Jones was particularly effective in the first half, scoring seven points as American established a foothold with a 32-26 lead at halftime. In the second half, Rogers showed his offensive abilities by contributing 12 points, ensuring his team maintained its advantage throughout the game.

Looking ahead, both teams are set to return to the court on Saturday. American will host Loyola (Maryland), while Lafayette will face Bucknell in a home matchup.
