NEW ORLEANS — The owner of the San Francisco 49ers, Jed York, has expressed the team’s strong commitment to quarterback Brock Purdy as they head into the offseason with plans to negotiate a long-term contract. York remarked that he recently met with Purdy’s agent, Kyle Strongin, and is optimistic about reaching an agreement.
“I know we want Brock to be here for a long time, and we’ll do everything we can to make that work,” York stated on Monday. This discussion occurred just after a ceremony where responsibility for hosting the Super Bowl was transferred from New Orleans to the San Francisco Bay area. The Super Bowl will return to Levi’s Stadium for the second time, following the 49ers’ previous hosting in February 2016.
Despite having three successful seasons with significant playoff achievements, including a close overtime loss in last year’s Super Bowl against Kansas City, the 49ers faced a challenging season in 2024. A string of injuries and subpar performances culminated in a disappointing 6-11 record. Nevertheless, with a talented roster that includes Purdy along with standout players like Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Trent Williams, Nick Bosa, and Fred Warner, the team remains hopeful for a strong season moving forward, particularly with the opportunity to play the Super Bowl at home.
York has expressed his confidence in head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch, believing they have the expertise to turn the team’s fortunes around. “There’s so much work before you get to that point,” he acknowledged. “It obviously started at the end of the season to get this thing ready, get it right, and get it back on track. There’s no one that I respect more and trust more than John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan to get us back on track.”
One of the key priorities for San Francisco this offseason is Purdy’s contract extension. He is approaching the conclusion of a very favorable rookie deal that he signed as the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Over his first three seasons, Purdy has earned less than $1 million per year, and he is in line for a modest increase to approximately $5.2 million in 2025 due to the league’s performance escalator after his Pro Bowl selection last season.
Given his on-field performance, Purdy’s value far exceeds his current salary, and he is now positioned to negotiate an extension that could potentially exceed $50 million annually. After finishing fourth in MVP voting during his first full season as a starter in 2023, Purdy’s performance declined this past season largely due to injuries impacting several key offensive contributors. His passer rating fell nearly 17 points to 96.1, and he recorded only 20 touchdown passes against 12 interceptions. Additionally, he faced challenges in several critical moments during games when the 49ers needed a comeback win.
Nevertheless, the organization’s belief in Purdy remains unwavering. “Brock is just a tremendous human being,” said York. “I’m looking forward to a long-term partnership.”
