MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers have announced that this season, they will wear a special patch on their uniforms to pay tribute to beloved broadcaster Bob Uecker, who passed away last month.

The patch will be adorned on the sleeves of the Brewers’ uniforms, featuring Uecker’s signature set against a gold-and-navy plaid design, which reflects the distinctive sportscoats he was known to wear throughout his career.

The official introduction of the patch took place on Monday, and it is set to make its first appearance when the Brewers kick off their preseason on February 22, facing off against the Cincinnati Reds in Phoenix.

Uecker, who died on January 16 at the age of 90, had just completed an impressive 54 seasons as the broadcaster for the Brewers, continuing to do so while bravely battling small cell lung cancer.

A Milwaukee native, Uecker was more than just a voice on the radio; his unique comedic talent led to frequent appearances in commercials and notable roles in the film “Major League” as well as the long-running series “Mr. Belvedere.” In recognition of his contributions to the sport, he received the prestigious Ford C. Frick Award from the Hall of Fame in 2003.

In the wake of his death, Brewers fans have shown their love and respect for Uecker by leaving baseballs, flowers, and cans of Miller Lite — a brand he famously endorsed — along with various personal mementos at the base of his statue located outside American Family Field in Milwaukee.

Rick Schlesinger, the Brewers’ president of business operations, expressed the team’s sentiments in a statement, saying, “We miss Bob every day, and all the more as we approach our first season without him at our side. Ueck was a great friend to all of us. He was a fixture at the ballpark and in our lives. We cannot fill the hole that his absence has created, but the jersey patch will be a way to honor his memory whenever we take the field.”

Additionally, the Brewers are planning to host a public celebration of Uecker’s life later this year, with further details to be announced in the coming months.
