The San Francisco 49ers have granted wide receiver Deebo Samuel the opportunity to explore potential trade options, as reported by a knowledgeable source. This decision remains under wraps at the moment, as the team has yet to make an official announcement. Initially, it was reported by ESPN that Samuel, along with his agent, received the green light to investigate a trade following his request during a season-ending discussion with head coach Kyle Shanahan.

“Talking to Kyle was tough given our relationship,” Samuel said in an interview with ESPN. “However, I have to prioritize my own interests. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities the Niners have provided me, but I believe it’s time to look for a new team.”

Samuel had a standout season in 2021, achieving All-Pro status with impressive stats that included 1,770 total yards and 14 touchdowns. However, his performance declined following a three-year, $71.6 million contract extension he signed in the subsequent offseason, which is effective through 2025. In the recent season, he recorded 51 receptions for 670 yards and three touchdowns, averaging just 3.2 yards on 42 carries while grappling with injury issues. Notably, Samuel has not surpassed 900 receiving yards in a season since his breakout year in 2021.

Although the 49ers considered trading Samuel last offseason, they did not receive any offers that met their needs. General manager John Lynch stated after the last season that they were not inclined to deal Samuel away.

The 49ers have a solid receiving corps even with Samuel’s potential departure. Brandon Aiyuk, who has recently signed a four-year, $120 million contract beginning in 2025, is recovering from significant knee surgery but is expected to be ready for the upcoming season. Jauan Jennings is in the last year of his two-year, $15.4 million deal, coming off a career-best season with 77 catches for 975 yards in 2024. Meanwhile, Ricky Pearsall, who was drafted in the first round last year, showed promise towards the end of the season and is poised for a larger role in 2025.

Samuel is set to receive a $15.4 million option bonus on March 22, alongside a base salary of $1.17 million for 2025. If a trade were to happen, San Francisco would incur a hefty $31.6 million dead-cap charge due to bonuses already disbursed that have yet to be accounted for in the salary cap.
