MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Amani Hansberry led the way for West Virginia with 17 points, guiding the team to a 72-61 triumph over Utah on Saturday evening.
Hansberry showcased his shooting skills by making three shots from beyond the arc and completing 6 of his 10 attempts from the field. In addition to Hansberry’s performance, Javon Small contributed significantly with 14 points and eight assists for West Virginia (15-8, 6-6 in Big 12 play). Joseph Yesufu matched Small’s score with his own 14 points, while Jonathan Powell added 11 points to the team’s efforts.
After enduring a three-game losing streak, the Mountaineers have responded well, winning two of their last three games.
On the other side, Keanu Dawes was notable for Utah (13-10, 5-7 in Big 12), netting 14 points and bringing down 11 rebounds. Jake Wahlin also contributed with 10 points for the Utes.
West Virginia was able to close the first half with momentum, finishing on a 12-3 run to establish a 36-27 lead. Toby Okani emerged during that half, scoring all nine of his points.
The Mountaineers expanded their lead to as much as 53-39 with 12:38 to play. Although the Utes managed to trim the deficit down to 64-59 with three minutes remaining, Powell stepped up and hit a crucial 3-pointer, helping West Virginia secure the victory.
This matchup marked the first encounter between these two teams since Utah edged out West Virginia 65-62 during a Sweet 16 contest at the NCAA Tournament on March 19, 1998.
Looking ahead, West Virginia is set to host BYU on Tuesday, while Utah will be traveling to Cincinnati for their next game.
