Protests in Athens Over Rail Disaster Investigation Delays

In Athens, Greece, thousands of high school and university students took to the streets on Friday, effectively blocking traffic in a demonstration against the government’s slow progress in the investigation of a rail disaster that resulted in 57 fatalities earlier this year.
The protesters made their way through the heart of the city, loudly chanting phrases such as “Murderers! Murderers!” while a significant police presence, including numerous officers in riot gear, looked on from the sidelines.

The tragic head-on collision occurred near a location called Tempe in northern Greece, where a passenger train was mistakenly directed onto the same track as an oncoming freight train, leading to the catastrophic event.
As deadlines loom for the investigation into the disaster, the pressure on the ruling conservative government has escalated, particularly as the two-year anniversary of the incident approaches on February 28.
This calamity has already sparked significant public unrest and political debate, drawing attention to safety issues and accountability within the rail system.
