SAALBACH-HINTERGLEMM, Austria — Italian skier Sofia Goggia came dangerously close to a mishap during an awkward jump landing in the final downhill training session at the Alpine skiing world championships on Friday.
Lindsey Vonn, an established competitor, finished in 21st place during the training run, a day after experiencing a problem with a gate during the super-G event.
As Goggia neared the end of her run, she took off high into the air, flailing her arms momentarily before descending awkwardly onto her skis. Although she fell onto her side and slid down the slope, she managed to get back up and ski to the finish area. Fortunately, the Italian team confirmed that she sustained no injuries.
Austrian athlete Stephanie Venier, who claimed the gold medal in the super-G on Thursday, also faced no difficulties as she completed her run near the end of the training session.
Leading the session was Czech athlete Ester Ledecka, who finished with a time that was 0.22 seconds faster than Austria’s Mirjam Puchner and 0.43 seconds ahead of Germany’s Emma Aicher. Puchner impressed with a remarkable top speed of 138.65 kph (86 mph) as she made her way down the course.
The highly anticipated women’s downhill race is set to take place on Saturday.
