LONG BEACH, Calif. — In an exciting matchup on Thursday night, the UC Davis Aggies triumphed over Long Beach State, securing a 73-65 overtime victory, largely thanks to a standout performance from Ty Johnson who scored an impressive 33 points.
Early in the overtime period, Pablo Tamba initiated the scoring with a layup just 24 seconds in, setting the tone for UC Davis, which maintained its lead for the remainder of the game. Johnson showcased his shooting prowess, hitting 9 out of 17 attempts from the field and going 4 of 8 from beyond the arc, along with an exceptional 11 for 14 from the charity stripe. Tamba contributed significantly as well, scoring 14 points on 7 of 10 shooting and pulling down five rebounds. Niko Rocak added to the effort with six points, hitting 3 of 4 shots, while also recording seven rebounds, three steals, and three blocks.
For Long Beach State, Devin Askew was the top scorer with 17 points, complemented by four assists and two steals. Cam Denson contributed 10 points, while Austin Johnson chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds. Unfortunately for the Beach, this loss marked their seventh consecutive defeat.
In a thrilling conclusion to regulation, Askew managed to tie the game by sinking two free throws with just five seconds on the clock, bringing the score to 58-58, which necessitated the overtime period.
Looking ahead, both teams are set to be back in action on Saturday, with UC Davis traveling to face Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State preparing to host Cal State Northridge.
