EUGENE, Ore. — Sarah Te-Biasu delivered an impressive performance, registering a season-high of 26 points, while Kaylene Smikle contributed 21 points along with nine rebounds. This impressive effort propelled the No. 16 Maryland Terrapins to a 79-61 victory over Oregon on Thursday night. The win also marked a significant milestone for coach Brenda Frese, as it was her 600th career victory with the Maryland program.
Frese has amassed an impressive record of 600-166 during her over 22 seasons at Maryland, leading to a total of 657 career wins. Additionally, Saylor Poffenbarger had a solid outing, scoring 13 points and securing 11 rebounds, while Allie Kubek chipped in with 11 points for the Terrapins, who now hold a record of 18-5, including 8-4 in the Big Ten Conference. This victory comes following a narrow loss to Illinois, where Maryland fell just short, 66-65.
The game saw Kubek score a layup early in the first quarter that shifted the momentum in favor of Maryland, igniting a 13-3 run to establish a decisive lead. By the conclusion of the first quarter, Maryland found themselves ahead 19-9, maintaining a double-digit lead for the duration of the game. Te-Biasu, known for her accolades as the Atlantic 10 player of the year at VCU last season, was instrumental in building the Terrapins’ lead, hitting three 3-pointers and finishing the first half with 17 points on an efficient 7-of-8 shooting. Maryland led at halftime with a score of 39-22.
In terms of shooting performance, Maryland excelled, hitting 54% of their shots from the field (25 of 46), converting 9 of 20 attempts from beyond the arc (45%), and sinking 20 of 23 free throws (87%). On the other hand, Oregon struggled offensively, managing only 32% shooting (19 of 59). For the Ducks, Ehis Etute was the leading scorer with 14 points, complemented by seven rebounds, while Ari Long added 11 points. Oregon entered this game looking to extend a four-game win streak, but faced a setback following their last outing, which resulted in a season-low 48 points in a 32-point defeat at the hands of Michigan.
The Ducks faced an additional challenge when Peyton Scott, their top scorer this season averaging 10.3 points per game, exited the contest in the second quarter due to a leg injury and did not return. He concluded the game with just four points from 1-of-4 shooting attempts. Looking ahead, Maryland will take on Washington on Sunday, while Oregon will host No. 1 UCLA in what will be the second game of three consecutive home matchups.
