This accolade has been awarded consistently over the years, highlighting the top assistant coaches in the league for their contributions and achievements.

In 2024, Ben Johnson from the Detroit Lions was honored with the prestigious title, reflecting his significant impact on the team’s performance. Meanwhile, Jim Schwartz from the Cleveland Browns received the recognition in 2023, showcasing his effective strategies and leadership.

Prior to that, DeMeco Ryans earned the award in 2022 for his work with the San Francisco 49ers. His innovative defensive schemes greatly contributed to their success. In 2021, Dan Quinn, then with the Dallas Cowboys, was celebrated for his impressive turnaround of the team’s defense.

The 2020 award went to Brian Daboll of the Buffalo Bills, who played a crucial role in developing the team’s offense. Before him, Greg Roman was acknowledged in 2019 as the assistant coach of the year for the remarkable offensive achievements he orchestrated with the Baltimore Ravens.

Vic Fangio received the honor in 2018 for his defensive prowess while serving as the Chicago Bears’ coach, leading to strong performances on the field. In 2017, Pat Shurmur was noted for his contributions with the Minnesota Vikings, helping elevate the team’s offensive game.

Kyle Shanahan took home the award in 2016, credited with designing effective plays for the Atlanta Falcons and leading them to success. Wade Phillips was recognized in 2015 for his impactful coaching during his tenure with the Denver Broncos.

The award was presented to Todd Bowles in 2014 for his exceptional work with the Arizona Cardinals, bolstering the team’s performance defensively. Each of these coaches has left a lasting impression in the NFL, as evidenced by their recognition as top assistants in the league.
