TORONTO — As announced on Thursday, Jordi Fernandez is resigning from his position as head coach of Canada’s senior men’s national basketball team, according to Canada Basketball.

Fernandez took the helm in 2023 following Nick Nurse’s departure, and under his leadership, the team achieved a significant milestone by qualifying for the Olympics for the first time in 24 years. Additionally, he guided Canada to a bronze medal victory at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, marking the nation’s first medal in this particular event.

At the Paris Olympics, Canada finished in fifth place, an outcome that still demonstrated the progress the team made during Fernandez’s tenure. Now in his first season with the Brooklyn Nets, the 42-year-old coach from Badalona, Spain, shared with Canada Basketball his decision not to pursue an extension of his contract. He cited the importance of prioritizing his family and his commitments in the NBA as reasons for his departure.

In light of Fernandez’s exit, Canada Basketball will initiate a search for a new head coach while gearing up for preparations leading to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
