PALM BEACH, Fla. – On Thursday, baseball team owners approved the appointment of John Seidler as the new control person for the San Diego Padres. John is the elder brother of the late Peter Seidler, who previously held this position as chairman of the Padres. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed optimism about this transition, stating that it ensures the continuing stewardship of the team by the Seidler family, a move described as wholly noncontroversial.

Though John Seidler has not yet been designated as the trustee of his brother’s estate, that designation is anticipated in the coming weeks. This decision by Major League Baseball has come against the backdrop of a legal dispute initiated by Peter Seidler’s widow. Sheel Seidler filed a lawsuit last month aiming to block John from assuming control of the team, asserting that it was Peter’s wish for her to take over as the team’s leading authority upon his passing.

Earlier this offseason, Matthew Seidler appointed John as the control person, a choice that has now received the backing of MLB’s owners. According to Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick, who spoke to the San Diego Union-Tribune regarding the decision, the Seidler family holds the largest stake in the team. He detailed that since Peter’s ownership is held within a trust, John’s upcoming role as trustee would make his appointment almost automatic. Kendrick also praised John, describing him as good-hearted and emphasizing the affection shared for Peter, noting that this transition aligns with Peter’s wishes.

Commissioner Manfred commented on the existing legal matters, indicating that they do not involve Major League Baseball directly, as the organization is confident that Peter Seidler’s estate plan is being appropriately implemented. He also clarified that there has been no dialogue surrounding the potential sale of the Padres, suggesting that the family is committed to maintaining ownership of the franchise. “My understanding is the family wants to keep the team,” Manfred stated, reassuring fans that there are no concerns of relocation either, describing San Diego as a fantastic market supported by an excellent facility.
