Nebraska pitcher Jordyn Bahl views the torn left ACL she endured last year, along with the season she lost, as silver linings in her athletic journey.
After being named Most Outstanding Player at the Women’s College World Series in 2023 while playing for Oklahoma, where she secured her second national championship title, Bahl returned to her home state with ambitions of leading Nebraska to the World Series in a new uniform. However, her debut game with the Cornhuskers ended in injury, and she was forced to observe Nebraska navigate a challenging season marked by injuries, finishing with a record of 30-23.
Despite the setback, Bahl maintained her optimistic outlook during her recovery. She recognized that the time off was beneficial for her perspective on the game. “Initially, I thought this would be a greater challenge than it was,” she shared. “What I discovered was that the time away allowed me to view the game from a fresh perspective, which was truly a gift. It felt rejuvenating. Now, I’m feeling energized and ready to give my all.”
Having impressed with her performance, pitching 24 2/3 scoreless innings during the previous World Series, Bahl is now eager to lead Nebraska’s pitching lineup and even partake in hitting and first base duties.
“This season, my aim is to play but also to remember that sense of freedom I experienced while sidelined, and carry that feeling into gameplay,” she expressed.
Head coach Rhonda Revelle emphasized the need to monitor Bahl’s workload carefully, as she will be a vital asset on the mound. “We will be strategic with her usage, especially during early tournaments with multiple games that may require us to rest her or use her in specific situations,” Revelle explained. “However, during conference play, we may fully lean on her abilities as we compete relentlessly.”
Bahl indicated she feels comfortable with the depth of Nebraska’s pitching roster, highlighting the capabilities of teammates like Hannah Camenzind, Emmerson Cope, Kylee Magee, and Caitlin Olensky. Camenzind earned All-Southeastern Conference second-team honors in 2023, while Magee was recognized on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team. Olensky topped the team last season with a 3.30 ERA, and Cope played in 21 games.
“Our pitching lineup is diverse and everyone contributes unique skills,” stated Bahl. “I firmly believe we have the tools to outplay any opponent. Unlike teams relying heavily on one or two pitchers, we are deep with five capable players. Our collective strength is undeniable, and each member brings a different approach.”
Although Bahl refrained from making bold predictions or imposing undue pressure on herself, the thought of the World Series has crossed her mind, and she knows her teammates share that aspiration. “We’ve discussed what it takes to reach that goal, and we understand what’s needed,” she noted. “A significant aspect involves allowing ourselves to focus while also maintaining accountability within the team, remaining cohesive and 25 strong.”
Ava Bredwell, Nebraska’s catcher, has observed Bahl’s relentless work ethic since her arrival and anticipates a smooth return to action. “Her commitment to daily improvement is evident,” Bredwell commented. “I was looking forward to catching her last fall, although it didn’t quite materialize then. Now, I’m excited to demonstrate the connection we’ve built through our training on the real field.”
