COLUMBUS, Ohio — Vivek Ramaswamy’s anticipated campaign for the governor of Ohio is significantly influencing the political landscape for the 2026 elections, as state Treasurer Robert Sprague, who has served two terms, has chosen to withdraw his candidacy for the governor’s role and instead pursue the position of secretary of state.
Sprague, 51, made his announcement via social media platform X, stating that he would offer his “full support” to Ramaswamy in his gubernatorial aspirations.
At 39 years old, Ramaswamy is a biotech entrepreneur originally from Cincinnati, who previously ranked in the race for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 without success. He recently played a role in leading an initiative for government efficiency under former President Donald Trump aimed at reducing government costs.
In a video endorsing Ramaswamy, Sprague emphasized that while “Ohio’s not broken,” there are various issues within Columbus that require attention and solutions. He highlighted Ramaswamy’s “outsider mentality” as a crucial asset that could facilitate needed reforms, such as completely abolishing the state income tax and transforming the state’s energy policies which he suggests have been influenced by special interests.
By endorsing Ramaswamy, Sprague has strategically avoided a direct contest with Attorney General Dave Yost, another Republican candidate who has already announced his intention to seek the governor’s seat, ensuring a clearer path for Ramaswamy.
This decision has also opened up the race for the secretary of state position, leading to what could become a competitive primary for Republicans. State Senator Niraj Antani has already declared his candidacy and state Senator Theresa Gavarone is anticipated to join the race soon. On the Democratic side, Dr. Bryan Hambley, an oncologist from Warren County near Cincinnati, has announced his candidacy.
The future secretary of state will succeed Republican Frank LaRose, who is facing term limits in 2026.
Promising to prioritize the security and integrity of Ohio’s elections, Sprague, a former lawmaker and county official, expressed his commitment to protecting the voting process if elected. In announcing his candidacy, he appealed to the people of Ohio, stating, “For the past six years, the people of Ohio have entrusted me to be a responsible steward of their tax dollars, and today I am asking them to put their trust in me to protect their sacred vote.”
