LONDON — Ozzy Osbourne is set to reunite with the original lineup of Black Sabbath for the first time in two decades during what is being advertised as a historic farewell concert. This event, dubbed “The Back to the Beginning” show, is scheduled for July 5 at Villa Park, the home of the Aston Villa Football Club located in Birmingham, England.
“It’s my time to go back to the beginning… time for me to give back to the place where I was born,” Osbourne expressed in a statement. “How blessed am I to do it with the help of people whom I love. Birmingham is the true home of metal. Birmingham forever.” As the frontman of Black Sabbath during their peak in the 1970s, Osbourne, often referred to as the “Prince of Darkness,” will perform a solo set prior to joining bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward on stage for their highly anticipated reunion.
The all-day festival will feature performances from several prominent metal bands, including Metallica, Slayer, and Alice In Chains, with more acts expected to be announced soon. Music director Tom Morello commented, “This will be the greatest heavy metal show ever.”
In recent years, Osbourne has faced several health challenges, including being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2020. He stepped back from touring in 2023 following extensive spinal surgery, and his health concerns date back to 2003 after he suffered serious injuries from a quad bike accident, which were further complicated by a home fall in 2019.
Black Sabbath’s journey began in Birmingham in 1968, when the four founding members aimed to break free from factory jobs. Their self-titled debut album released in 1970 reached the U.K. top 10, leading to a series of hit albums such as “Master of Reality” in 1971 and “Vol. 4” the following year. They would eventually become one of the most revered and successful metal bands in history, selling over 75 million albums globally.
Osbourne’s popularity surged into mainstream culture in the early 2000s when he starred alongside his wife Sharon and two children in the hit MTV reality show “The Osbournes.”
All proceeds from the concert on July 5 will be donated to charitable organizations, including Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorn Children’s Hospice, an initiative supported by Aston Villa.
Tickets for this monumental event will be available for purchase starting Friday, February 14.
