A woman is facing murder charges following the discovery of her 9-year-old son’s remains buried in their backyard in Detroit, according to statements made by the prosecutor on Wednesday.
On January 6, the landlord stumbled upon a shallow grave while getting the property ready for new occupants, leading to the grim discovery of Zemar King’s body. Although initial details were scarce, local police confirmed that an investigation was actively pursuing the matter.
The tragic incident occurred on October 24, when Zemar was reportedly smothered to death, just two weeks prior to his 41-year-old mother relocating to Georgia with her other son, a 3-year-old.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy remarked on the severity of the case, stating, “I have been a prosecutor for a long time, and I often say that I have seen it all. The horrors of this child abuse case defy that.”
The mother was apprehended on January 10 in Cobb County, Georgia, due to an unrelated situation, and she is currently pending extradition back to Michigan to face the charges against her. “This case is rather shocking,” commented Todd Bettison, interim chief of police in Detroit.
The case continues to develop, as the community and authorities grapple with the devastating nature of the crime.
