Joe Root returns to England’s ODI squad following 2023 Cricket World Cup exit.

NAGPUR, India — Joe Root is set to return to England’s one-day international (ODI) squad for the first time since the conclusion of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
The seasoned 34-year-old batter is expected to take the No. 3 batting position in the opening game of the ODI series against India, taking place in Nagpur on Thursday. This match will mark his 172nd appearance in ODIs for England.
Recognized as one of the premier batters of his time, Root has showcased impressive performances in Test cricket since stepping down from the captaincy two and a half years ago. However, his presence in the ODI team has been sporadic, and he has not played in a T20 international match since 2019.
England’s captain Jos Buttler expressed his enthusiasm about Root’s return, stating, “He’s one of the game’s great players across all formats and an integral part of England’s ODI squad for many years. I’m looking forward to seeing him thrive in this new chapter of his career — particularly given his impressive Test performances after relinquishing leadership duties. He comes back with that characteristic cheeky smile, fully enjoying his cricket.”
Buttler went on to emphasize the valuable experience Root brings to the team, which could greatly benefit younger players who have less ODI experience.
This ODI series follows England’s recent 4-1 defeat in a T20 series against India, which were the first matches under Brendon McCullum’s tenure as head coach for the white-ball format.
The ongoing three-match ODI series is anticipated to serve as crucial preparation for the upcoming Champions Trophy, commencing on February 19, and will take place in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.
