The Chicago Cubs made a notable move on Tuesday by trading for Ryan Brasier from the Los Angeles Dodgers, enhancing their bullpen after he was recently let go by the World Series champions.
In exchange for Brasier, the Cubs will provide either a player to be named later or cash to the Dodgers. Last season, Brasier recorded a 1-0 record along with a 3.54 ERA over 29 appearances, which included four starts. As part of the transaction, the Dodgers are also sending cash to the Cubs.
Chicago’s acquisition follows Brasier’s designation for assignment, which occurred when the Dodgers completed a one-year agreement with pitcher Kirby Yates the previous Thursday.
The Cubs have been proactive as they aim to return to playoff contention for the first time since 2020, particularly by strengthening their bullpen through various trades. Earlier, they acquired Eli Morgan and Ryan Pressly in two separate deals, in addition to securing Cody Poteet from the New York Yankees as part of the Cody Bellinger trade.
The 37-year-old Brasier, in the second year of a two-year contract worth $4.5 million, has the opportunity to become a free agent following the World Series. He faced challenges earlier in the season, notably not pitching for the Dodgers from April 27 to August 17, due to a strained right calf that he suffered during pregame warmups.
Brasier began his major league career with the Angels back in 2013. He joined the Dodgers after being released by the Boston Red Sox in May 2023, showcasing his talents with a 1.89 ERA across 68 appearances with the NL West team. Over his entire career, Brasier holds a record of 10-8, a 3.85 ERA, and has achieved 10 saves in 297 games played.
To accommodate Brasier on the Chicago 40-man roster, the Cubs have designated left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny for assignment.
