PHOENIX — Randal Grichuk is set to return to the Arizona Diamondbacks for another season after agreeing to a one-year contract worth $5 million, which was finalized on Tuesday.
The contract includes a base salary of $2 million along with a mutual option for the following year valued at $5 million, which comes with a $3 million buyout. Grichuk also has the opportunity to gain an additional $500,000 through performance bonuses based on his plate appearances in 2025, receiving $250,000 for reaching 200 and again for 275 plate appearances.
In the event of a trade, Grichuk will earn a one-time assignment bonus of $250,000.
The 33-year-old outfielder was first picked by the Los Angeles Angels as the 24th overall selection in the 2009 amateur draft. Last February, he signed a contract with Arizona valued at $2 million and successfully earned $1.25 million in performance incentives during the past season.
During 2023, Grichuk recorded a batting average of .291, hitting 12 home runs and driving in 46 runs across 254 at-bats. He began the season on the injured list while recovering from surgery on his right ankle but made his debut for the Diamondbacks on April 6. Over the course of the season, he made a total of 35 starts in right field, 15 as a designated hitter, and 11 in left field, indicating he will likely maintain a similar position in the upcoming season.
Grichuk entered free agency after the Diamondbacks opted not to continue with the mutual option on his contract.
Throughout his career, he has posted a batting average of .252, accumulating 203 home runs and 602 RBIs while playing for teams including St. Louis (2014-17), Toronto (2018-21), Colorado (2022-23), the Angels (2023), and the Diamondbacks.
