HOUSTON — The Houston Astros have announced that they will retire the jersey number of their all-time saves leader, Billy Wagner. This prestigious honor will align with his upcoming induction into the Hall of Fame, which the team revealed on Tuesday.
Wagner’s iconic No. 13 will become the 10th number to be retired by the Astros in a ceremony scheduled for August 16. The former pitcher is set to be inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 27, along with notable figures such as Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, Dave Parker, and Dick Allen.
During his time with the Astros from 1995 to 2003, Wagner earned three All-Star selections and recorded a total of 225 saves. Notably, he finished fourth in the NL Cy Young Award voting in 1999 after an exceptional season where he secured 39 saves in 42 chances, maintained a remarkable 1.57 ERA, and accumulated 124 strikeouts while giving up only 35 hits over 74 2/3 innings. Opponents managed to hit just .135 against him that year, showcasing his dominance on the mound.
In 2003, Wagner was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he continued his successful career, amassing an additional 197 saves across his time with the Phillies, Mets, Red Sox, and Braves before hanging up his cleats in 2010.
Christian Walker, who joined the Astros in December and had originally intended to wear No. 13, will now change his number to 8, respecting Wagner’s legacy.
