NEW ORLEANS — Head Coach Andy Reid has made it clear that he has no intentions of stepping away from the Kansas City sidelines anytime soon.
As he gears up for the Chiefs’ fifth Super Bowl appearance in just six seasons, the 66-year-old coach dispelled any rumors that he might consider retiring if Kansas City clinches a third consecutive championship.
“Yes, I’ll be back,” Reid affirmed on Tuesday.
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt echoed Reid’s sentiment, expressing hope that the esteemed coach will remain at the helm for many more years.
“I don’t have a sense that he’s remotely close to wanting to be done,” Hunt commented to reporters in the Kansas City area.
He added, “He’s always said he’ll know when the time is right, and I’m sure he’ll share that with me before telling everyone else — at least, that’s my hope. I don’t sense he’s anywhere close to being done.”
Reid is on the brink of becoming one of the most successful coaches in NFL history.
If the Chiefs emerge victorious on Sunday, he will join the ranks of the few head coaches who have won four or more Super Bowl titles, joining legends Bill Belichick, who has six, and Chuck Noll, who has four.
Reid also stands fourth all-time with a total of 301 wins across both regular and playoff games, coming within reach of Don Shula’s all-time record of 347 wins.
However, he indicated that personal accolades are not the driving force behind his desire to continue coaching.
“That’s not part of it,” he said emphatically.
“I just enjoy teaching and being around the guys. I love the game of football. You can’t put in the hours we do without that passion. I truly enjoy it.”
