MUNICH — Canadian wing back Alphonso Davies has officially extended his contract with Bayern Munich. The German football club announced on Tuesday that the 24-year-old has agreed to a new deal that will keep him with the team until June 2030. His previous contract was set to end at the conclusion of this season.

Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, commented on the significance of Davies for the team’s future, stating, “Phonzy has been a part of Bayern since he was 18 and has quickly become integral to the club. We recognize him as a key player in the new generation that is stepping up and taking on more responsibilities. He has matured with us and will continue to develop alongside the team.”

The negotiations between Davies and Bayern took time, particularly with reported interest from clubs like Real Madrid. Eberl mentioned earlier this year that Bayern had submitted its final offer to the player. However, Real Madrid did not take immediate action regarding their interest, leading Davies to stay with Bayern, the team he joined in 2018 for a record fee from the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer.

Reflecting on his journey, Davies expressed excitement about his continued tenure, saying, “I arrived at FC Bayern as an 18-year-old, eager to learn and become one of the top players in my position. Now, I’m excited about spending the next five years here. I have accomplished a lot already, but there is still much more I wish to achieve.”

Born in the Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana, Davies’ family fled civil unrest in Liberia before settling in Edmonton, Canada in 2006 when he was just five years old. He started his soccer journey playing in school and later joined a free after-school league designed for children in the inner city.

At 14, Davies joined the Vancouver Whitecaps residency program and quickly made history by becoming the youngest player to compete in the United Soccer League as well as the first player born in the 21st century to step onto the pitch in the MLS.

Throughout his career at Bayern, Davies has made 220 competitive appearances, netting 12 goals and providing 34 assists. His achievements with the club include winning five Bundesliga titles, two German Cups, and a Champions League trophy. On the international stage, he has represented Canada in 56 games.

Davies’ contract extension follows the recent announcement that veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has also signed a one-year extension. Meanwhile, Bayern’s midfielder Joshua Kimmich and forwards Leroy Sané and Thomas Müller are facing the end of their contracts this season. Additionally, there are uncertainties surrounding the future of star attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala, whose contract expires next year.
