Former Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby has made the decision to retire from professional football after a distinguished career in the NFL. Announcing his retirement on Tuesday during his radio show on Milwaukee’s 105.7 The Fan, the 40-year-old leaves behind an impressive legacy as the Packers’ all-time leading scorer, a title he earned during his time with the team from 2007 to 2022.
Crosby expressed deep gratitude for his journey in the league, reflecting on his time with the Packers after being drafted in the sixth round from the University of Colorado. He remarked, “I’m just so, so thankful, so grateful for the opportunity to come to Green Bay in 2007… It’s about the fans. It’s about the people. It’s about my teammates. For me, I was always a ‘we’ guy.” His pride in the team’s achievements is evident, noting the nine NFC North titles and a Super Bowl victory they secured together during his tenure.
Over the course of his career, Crosby exhibited remarkable consistency, successfully making 81.3% of his field goal attempts (400 out of 492) and converting 97.2% of his extra point attempts (739 out of 760). The Packers chose not to re-sign him for the 2023 season, opting instead to draft Anders Carlson in the sixth round. Although Crosby spent a brief period with the New York Giants, where he played three games and made 5 out of 7 field goals, he ultimately decided to step away from the sport this season.
Crosby’s scoring record with the Packers stands at 1,918 points, placing him 864 points ahead of the second-highest scorer for the franchise, Ryan Longwell, who accumulated 1,054 points during his tenure from 1997 to 2005. Following his games with the Giants, Crosby’s total points reached 1,939, securing him the 11th position in NFL history for points scored.
In addition to his scoring feats, Crosby set a franchise milestone by participating in 258 games with the Packers, surpassing Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre, who played 255 games for the team from 1992 to 2007. His contributions have left a significant mark on the team and will be remembered by fans and teammates alike.
