CANNES, France — Juliette Binoche has been named the jury president for the 78th Cannes Film Festival, as announced by festival organizers on Tuesday.
Having taken over the role from last year’s jury head Greta Gerwig, this marks the second consecutive year that Cannes will be led by a female jury president.
Binoche, a prominent figure in French cinema, has a long history with the festival, making her debut 40 years ago with André Téchiné’s film “Rendez-vous.” Over the decades, she has graced the Cannes red carpet multiple times, including appearances in acclaimed films such as Krzysztof Kie?lowski’s “Blue,” Michael Haneke’s “Caché,” and Abbas Kiarostami’s “Certified Copy.”
Reflecting on her experience, Binoche stated, “In 1985, I walked up the steps for the first time with the enthusiasm and uncertainty of a young actress; I never imagined I’d return 40 years later in the honorary role of President of the Jury. I appreciate the privilege, the responsibility and the absolute need for humility.”
The festival, scheduled to take place from May 13 to May 24, will announce its official lineup in mid-April. Last year under Gerwig’s leadership, the jury awarded the prestigious Palme d’Or to Sean Baker’s film “Anora.”
Historically, the last occurrence of two women serving in succession as jury presidents in Cannes was in 1966 when Sophia Loren followed Olivia de Havilland.
