Rich Dauer, a former infielder who had an impressive ten-year career in Major League Baseball, passed away at the age of 72. He was noted for his contributions both as a player with the Baltimore Orioles and later as a coach with the Houston Astros, where he celebrated a World Series victory. The Orioles confirmed his passing on Monday but did not disclose the cause of death.

In a heartfelt tribute on social media, Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer remarked on Dauer’s positive influence, stating, “My long-time teammate Richie Dauer passes. Was part of the Oriole way, where you didn’t have to be a star to help the O’s win. Richie had an infectious personality that kept us loose, yet focused. Another reason I was so blessed to be an Oriole for life. RIP.”

After the Astros triumphed in the 2017 World Series, Dauer, who held the position of first base coach at that time, underwent emergency surgery to address a blood clot in his brain. Reports in 2023 indicated that he had suffered a significant stroke shortly before his passing.

Former Astros manager A.J. Hinch expressed his admiration for Dauer, saying, “Baseball has brought incredible people into my life. Loved him when he coached me and learned from him when he was on my staff in Houston. RIP, my friend. And thank you for being you.”

Dauer represented the Orioles from 1976 to 1985 and made notable contributions to the team’s history. He was the one who homered to start the scoring in Game 7 of the 1979 World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, although the Orioles did not go on to win the game. However, in 1983, he played a crucial role in leading the team to victory against the Philadelphia Phillies in another World Series appearance.

In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Dauer was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 2012. He was also celebrated as part of the 2021 class for the College Baseball Hall of Fame, having played a key role in helping the Southern California team clinch national championships in 1973 and 1974.
