NEW ORLEANS — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed that there remains considerable work ahead before the league contemplates extending its schedule to include 18 regular-season games.
During a news conference before the Super Bowl on Monday, Goodell revealed that the league has not entered into formal negotiations with the players’ union regarding the potential addition of another game, although he mentioned having informal conversations with NFL Players Association (NFLPA) executive director Lloyd Howell Jr.
The NFL introduced a 17th game and reduced the preseason from four games to three for the 2021 season. Goodell has shown a keen interest in exploring the option of adding another game to the season in the future.
“If we do, 18 and 2 might be a possibility,” he stated, hinting at the idea of a balanced structure with fewer preseason games. Goodell acknowledged the fans’ enthusiasm for football, saying that they desire more of it, yet emphasized the importance of being thoughtful and careful in how the league approaches any changes.
Moreover, Goodell pointed out that adjustments made in player equipment and the training regimens during the offseason and preseason have led to a decline in concussions and other injuries. He believes these changes may make the idea of incorporating an additional game more feasible.
As discussions evolve, the NFL remains focused on finding the right balance to ensure player safety while catering to the growing demand for more football.
