Blackhawks call up D Artyom Levshunov from AHL and put D Louis Crevier on injured reserve

CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks have brought Artyom Levshunov up from the minor leagues, allowing the second overall pick from last year’s NHL draft to join the team for practice during the AHL All-Star break.

Levshunov, a 19-year-old defenseman, has put up three goals and 10 assists over 38 games with the Rockford IceHogs. He had to sit out at the beginning of the season due to a fractured right foot.

Chicago’s general manager, Kyle Davidson, noted, “We viewed this as a valuable opportunity for Arty’s growth to engage in some NHL-level practice experience, which he missed out on during training camp because of his injury.” He added, “While we don’t anticipate him participating in any games during this recall, we believe that the experience will be beneficial for Arty as he continues his development journey.”

The IceHogs are set to play their next game on Friday night in Texas.

Additionally, the Blackhawks have placed defenseman Louis Crevier on injured reserve. The 23-year-old took part in 23 games for Chicago, contributing three goals and one assist, and is currently undergoing concussion protocol.

Moreover, Blackhawks forward Ryan Donato was absent from practice due to what the team has termed a maintenance day. Donato has recorded 15 goals and 15 assists in 50 games and may be a candidate for trade ahead of the March 7 deadline.

Currently, the struggling Blackhawks occupy the last place in the standings, holding a record of 4-12-3 over their past 19 games. They are set to take on the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night.

Levshunov, originally from Belarus, had a stellar single season at Michigan State, scoring nine goals and providing 26 assists. He earned recognition as the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year during that time.

In July, Levshunov signed a three-year entry-level contract with Chicago, which carries a salary cap hit of $975,000.
