MUNICH — In a move that underscores their commitment to experience amidst a wave of new talent in European soccer, Bayern Munich has announced the re-signing of a veteran player. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who has been an integral part of the club since 2011, has agreed to extend his contract for an additional year. This agreement comes just as the deadline for new signings approaches, marking an important moment as Neuer prepares to celebrate 15 years with Bayern next year. The 38-year-old’s initial contract was set to conclude at the end of the current season.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the extension, Neuer stated, “I’m still hungry and am looking forward to another year at this special club.” He shared his sentiment alongside a photograph featuring him with over 20 of his goalkeeper kits from his time at Bayern. He added, “We’ve still got many goals to achieve together.” Throughout his tenure, Neuer has secured multiple accolades, including two UEFA Champions League titles and 11 German league championships, solidifying his status in the sport.
Despite his success, Neuer’s age has occasionally led to increased scrutiny, especially following incidents like the red card he received during the previous December, which marked the first of his career. Interestingly, Neuer has outlasted several players who were once considered potential replacements. Notably, Alexander Nübel, who joined the team in 2020, has spent the majority of his time on loan at various clubs, including Monaco and Stuttgart. Additionally, Bayern recently added another goalkeeper option for the future, bringing in Jonas Urbig from second-tier Cologne.
Welcoming Neuer back, Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, shared high praise for the goalkeeper, calling him “the best goalkeeper of his generation and a Bayern icon.” Eberl emphasized Neuer’s global recognition in the world of goalkeeping, stating, “When you talk about goalkeeping in our time, you talk about Manuel Neuer — and that’s around the world. He’s an absolute role model, both on and off the pitch. We’re delighted that this unique and successful relationship will continue.”
