WREXHAM, Wales – The Wrexham football club has unveiled plans for a new Kop Stand at its iconic Racecourse stadium, aiming to enhance its seating capacity by 5,500. This initiative is part of a broader renovation project showing the commitment of the club’s celebrity owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, towards improving the facilities.
The announcement was made on Monday, highlighting that the new stand will meet UEFA’s standards. This compliance is crucial as it paves the way for Wrexham to host matches for the European Under-19 Championship in 2026, along with other international events.
The Racecourse stadium is historically significant, being the oldest soccer venue in the world still staging international matches, with its inaugural game dating back to 1877. The club’s Kop Stand has remained closed since 2007, although last season saw the installation of a temporary stand that added over 2,000 seats to accommodate fans.
Since acquiring the club in 2021 and featuring it in the TV series “Welcome to Wrexham,” Reynolds and McElhenney have actively pursued advancements for the stadium. Their objective includes restoring the four stands of the Racecourse, with the new Kop Stand being a centerpiece of these efforts.
Designs for the stand incorporate a players’ tunnel, providing an exciting entrance for athletes as they make their way onto the pitch, further enhancing the matchday experience for fans.
