COLLEGE PARK, Md. — In a thrilling finish, Genesis Bryant sealed a historic victory for Illinois as she sunk two critical free throws with just 6.3 seconds remaining, leading her team to a 66-65 triumph over No. 14 Maryland on Sunday. This marked the first time in history that the Fighting Illini have defeated the Terrapins, ending their previous record of 0-17 against them.
The game was tightly contested, with Maryland clinging to a one-point lead after Shyanne Sellers scored with 13.9 seconds on the clock. Bryant’s quick drive to the basket drew a foul, and she calmly converted both free throws to take the lead. Maryland had one more opportunity to reclaim the win, but Sellers missed a shot that would have won the game. After the rebound went out of bounds to the Terrapins with just 1.8 seconds left, Sellers attempted a baseline shot but could not find the mark.
With this loss, the Terrapins were unable to give their head coach, Brenda Frese, her 600th career victory at the university. The defeat also compounded Maryland’s recent struggles, marking their fourth loss in five games, while Illinois secured its fourth consecutive win.
Bryant led the Fighting Illini, scoring 20 points in the game. Her performance included a crucial moment when Brynn Shoup-Hill hit a 3-pointer with 45.6 seconds remaining, giving Illinois a brief 64-63 edge. After an open three-point attempt by Sarah Te-Biasu failed for Maryland, the Illini faced pressure and used their final timeout. However, after a turnover, Sellers managed to score again, giving Maryland a 65-64 advantage before Bryant’s final heroics.
Maryland’s Kaylene Smikle was the top scorer for her team, tallying 15 points. At halftime, the Terrapins led 32-30. The momentum shifted when Sellers took a hard fall early in the third quarter but returned shortly after. Maryland expanded their lead to 42-33, yet Illinois responded swiftly with a 10-0 run, showcasing their resilience.
Looking ahead, Illinois will prepare to host Northwestern on Thursday. Meanwhile, Maryland will hit the road, set to face Oregon on the West Coast on Thursday, followed by a matchup against Washington on Sunday.
