NEW YORK — On Friday, the New York Mets announced that they have secured infielder Nick Madrigal on a one-year deal.
In the previous season, Madrigal played a total of 51 games for the Chicago Cubs, where he recorded a batting average of .221 along with 10 runs batted in. He was released by the Cubs after being non-tendered in November.
The 27-year-old infielder is expected to vie for a position on New York’s bench during the upcoming spring training. Notably, he has experience starting in the Major Leagues at both second base and third base.
To accommodate Madrigal on the roster, infielder Luis De Los Santos has been designated for assignment.
Standing at 5 feet 8 inches tall, Madrigal was drafted fourth overall by the Chicago White Sox in the 2018 amateur draft following a successful career at Oregon State University. He later transitioned to the Cubs as part of a trade in July 2021 that involved reliever Craig Kimbrel.
Throughout his career in the MLB, Madrigal has maintained a batting average of .274, hitting four home runs along with 77 RBIs and 17 stolen bases over 285 games played.
