Free agent pitcher Jeison Pena has received an 80-game suspension under the minor league drug policy, while Colorado Rockies pitcher Ulises Reyes has been suspended for 56 games. The announcements were made by the commissioner’s office, stating that both had tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance Stanozolol.
Pena, a 22-year-old right-handed pitcher, had signed with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2020 and played for Class A Carolina over the past two seasons. Last year, he recorded a 3-1 win-loss record with a 5.02 ERA in 30 relief outings. He was released from the team on October 8.
Reyes, at just 19 years old, signed with the Rockies in December 2023 for a $15,000 signing bonus. He made an appearance in 15 games during the previous season for the Dominican Summer League Rockies, achieving a 1-0 record but with a higher ERA of 7.00.
These suspensions mark the first for minor league players in the current year. Last season, a total of 20 suspensions were handed out due to positive drug tests, including nine under the minor league program and an additional nine for players who were assigned outside of the U.S. and Canada. In contrast, two players faced suspensions last year under the major league drug program. Notably, Noelvi Marté, a promising 22-year-old infielder viewed as Cincinnati’s top prospect, was suspended for the initial 80 games after testing positive for the substance boldenone. Similarly, Toronto’s infielder Orelvis Martínez received an 80-game suspension on June 23 after he tested positive for clomiphene, which was announced shortly after his major league debut.
