DAKAR, Senegal — Khaby Lame, a highly acclaimed TikTok influencer from Senegal, has taken on a significant new role as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, engaging directly with the youth in his homeland during a recent visit. Known for his expressive and humorous videos that require no spoken words, Lame has captivated an audience of over 162 million followers, particularly gaining popularity during the pandemic when he transitioned from a factory job to creating content full-time.
In his new position with UNICEF, Lame expressed his desire to gain a broader understanding of global issues and hopes to play a part in addressing them. “It’s a true honor to be appointed as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador and be part of an organization that puts children’s rights front and center every day,” he stated. His personal experiences—ranging from childhood worries about poverty to the challenges he faced during the COVID-19 crisis—have shaped his belief that every child deserves opportunities to thrive.
With over 60% of Senegal’s population under the age of 25, and a significant portion engaged in informal employment, many young people feel the pressure of poverty and limited prospects. This has led to a disturbing trend of migration, as countless individuals risk their lives in search of better conditions abroad. Lame encouraged Senegalese youth to remain hopeful and ambitious, saying, “I tell them to dream big. Try and do your best to accomplish your dreams, even though there are people telling you that you cannot reach them.”
Having moved to Italy as a toddler with his family, Lame only acquired Italian citizenship at the age of 20. Reflecting on his dual identity, he stated, “My blood is from Senegal, but I feel Senegalese and Italian at the same time.” Dressed elegantly in a beige suit and matching tie during his appearance in Dakar, he affirmed his strong connection to both cultures.
Lame’s ambassadorial role with UNICEF coincided with a four-day visit to Senegal, during which he had the opportunity to meet with children and young people committed to fostering positive changes within their communities. This engagement signifies not just a personal milestone for Lame, but also a hope for continued progress and support for the youth of Senegal.
