STOCKHOLM — On Friday, Swedish authorities announced that they have decided to release five individuals who were taken into custody following the deadly shooting of an Iraqi man known for conducting multiple Quran burnings.

The man, Salwan Momika, gained notoriety in 2023 for his public demonstrations where he burned and desecrated the Quran. His actions sparked global outrage, leading to significant protests and riots in various Muslim countries.

Momika was fatally shot on Wednesday night at an apartment complex located in Sodertalje, which is in proximity to Stockholm. In the hours that followed the incident, five suspects were arrested on allegations of homicide.

Prosecutor Rasmus Öman issued a statement on Friday, indicating that the evidence supporting the murder charges had diminished, thus eliminating the necessity for continued detention of the suspects.

The prosecutor’s office clarified that while the charges have not been fully dismissed, investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding Momika’s death and to identify any individuals responsible for the act.
