BALTIMORE — In a distressing incident at a Baltimore courthouse, a man, presumed to be in the midst of a behavioral crisis, shot himself in the head after police attempted to engage him near a security checkpoint. According to the city’s police commissioner, the individual, aged 35, is currently in critical condition at a nearby hospital. It has also been reported that a bailiff shot the man in his lower body prior to the self-inflicted injury.

During a press briefing outside the district courthouse, Police Commissioner Richard Worley detailed the series of events that unfolded. He mentioned that it was evident the man was experiencing a significant crisis as he wandered back and forth before entering the courthouse. As he crossed the threshold, deputies and bailiffs tried to communicate with him. However, at one point, he pulled a gun from his person and aimed it at his own head.

In response to the escalating situation, Worley explained that the deputies and bailiffs made attempts to persuade him to lower the firearm. “Regrettably, he did not comply,” he said. “At a certain moment, one of the bailiffs discharged their weapon, and then the man inflicted a gunshot wound to himself.”

The commissioner confirmed that the man was the sole person involved in the shooting incident. Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed during the ordeal. Additionally, Worley clarified that the man did not manage to pass through the courthouse’s security measures and indicated that the reasons behind his presence at the Eastside District Court remain unclear.
