PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday that the iconic cauldron balloon, a standout feature of the Paris Olympics, will continue to light up the skies of the French capital every summer until the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Macron shared a captivating video on his TikTok, showcasing the cauldron gracefully soaring through the night sky, accompanied by Celine Dion’s rendition of Edith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” (“Hymn to Love”), the same song that Dion performed during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
Beginning June 21, coinciding with Music Day in France, the cauldron is set to return until mid-September every year leading up to 2028.
Notably, the Paris cauldron marks a historic first for the Olympics, as it operates without fossil fuels, utilizing water and electric light to create its dazzling display.
This impressive 7-meter (23-foot) diameter ring of fire, suspended by a massive air balloon, captivated audience members throughout the duration of the Games. Each evening, it attracted thousands as it ascended over 60 meters (197 feet) above ground level, with the launch zone situated near the iconic glass pyramid entrance of the Louvre museum.
In response to the announcement, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took to Instagram to express her joy, revealing that the cauldron will be reinstalled in the Tuileries Gardens, its location during the Olympics.
“I’m delighted,” she proclaimed, declaring, “This is very, very good news,” and emphasizing how it represents a lasting legacy of the Paris Games that will be cherished for years to come.
