EAST LANSING, Mich. – In a thrilling encounter, Oregon triumphed over No. 16 Michigan State with a score of 63-59 on Thursday night, marking the Spartans’ inaugural loss at home this season.
Oregon established an early advantage, leading 35-23 at halftime, and extended their lead to 55-40 by the end of the third quarter. However, Michigan State initiated a fierce comeback in the fourth quarter, launching a 15-3 run, which was highlighted by Julia Ayrault’s basket with just 4 minutes remaining. Unfortunately for the Spartans, they were unable to make another field goal until the very closing seconds when Ines Sotelo hit a three-pointer, cutting into Oregon’s lead.
The Ducks also faced difficulties in the final quarter, with their sole field goal coming from Deja Kelly’s jumper at the free-throw line with 5:36 remaining. Despite a shaky performance from the free-throw line, Phillipina Kyei managed to convert two crucial shots with just 13.9 seconds left on the clock, giving Oregon a 63-56 advantage.
Kelly contributed significantly to Oregon’s victory, posting 10 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. The Ducks improved their record to 16-5 overall and 7-3 in the Big Ten, boasting a streak of four consecutive wins and seven victories in their last eight games. Nani Falatea also made a solid impact off the bench, adding 10 points and five rebounds.
For Michigan State (17-4, 7-3), both Ayrault and Grace VanSlooten, a former Oregon player, scored 14 points each, while Theryn Hallock contributed 12 points. The Spartans found themselves trailing after the first quarter at home for the first time this season, struggling to a shooting performance of just 3-of-14 in the opening frame.
With this victory, the Ducks improved their record to a perfect 13-0 when leading at halftime. Despite their setback, the Spartans had entered the matchup riding a five-game winning streak and remained undefeated at home prior to this game.
Next, Oregon will continue their road trip, taking on Michigan on Sunday, while Michigan State prepares to face Northwestern.
