WEST SACRAMENTO, California — On Thursday, the Oakland Athletics finalized a deal to acquire catcher Jhonny Pereda from the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash considerations.

Pereda, 28 years old, made his major league debut last season, participating in 20 games where he recorded a batting average of .231, alongside four runs batted in (RBIs). During his time at Triple-A Jacksonville, he demonstrated impressive offensive skills, achieving a .297 batting average, hitting four home runs, and driving in 14 RBIs across 49 games, while also showcasing a strong on-base plus slugging (OPS) of .829.

In conjunction with this trade, the A’s have designated catcher Kyle McCann for assignment to make space for Pereda on the roster. McCann contributed to the team throughout the entirety of the 2024 season as a backup catcher, marking his entrance into the major leagues. Over the course of 54 games, he posted a batting average of .236, hitting five home runs and collecting 15 RBIs.

While the Athletics continue to shape their roster, the move highlights their efforts to strengthen their catching lineup by bringing in Pereda, who has shown promise in both the majors and the minor leagues. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how Pereda integrates into the team’s plans and whether McCann will find a new opportunity elsewhere.
